London Calling

Auckland City Brass presents London Calling, a concert of music for brass band inspired by one of the world’s greatest cities.

  • Philip Sparke’s A London Overture is an ode to England’s capital, featuring a majestic opening theme and contrasting colours.

  • Derek Bourgeois’ Blitz has been described as “a test of skill, nerve, and stamina, culminating in an aural ‘Blitz’ of great ferocity.” It recalls the air attacks on London during World War II.

  • In Memoriam, from George Lloyd’s Royal Parks, is dedicated to the bandsmen killed in a terrorist attack in Regent’s Park.

  • Denis Wright’s arrangement of George Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks brings to mind the pomp and ceremony of a fireworks display fit for a king on the River Thames.

  • Knightsbridge March is one of three musical portraits of London composed by Eric Coates, capturing the bustle of the famous retail district.

Tickets available via iTicket.

A Call for Peace

For this performance, Auckland City Brass joins forces with Auckland Choral and their conductor Uwe Grodd in a powerful arrangement of Karl Jenkin’s The Armed Man for choir and brass band. Complementing the main work are two New Zealand pieces: David Hamilton’s A Call to Arms for baritone, choir, and brass band, and Fendall Hill’s Perspectives from Gallipoli. Together, these works form a stirring programme of remembrance, resilience, and peace. Tickets available here.
